*COMMS WEEK 1*: WELCOME (BACK) TO DOWNING!

Hi Ugs (Undergrads)

WELCOME to the first Comms email of the year! For all the freshers, a little bit about me: I am Tasha Smith- your JCR Communications Officer. I’m a third year HSPS student; I love photography, and most people know me for playing loads of (probably too much) Ultimate frisbee.
Every Thursday, I will be sending out a newsletter into your inboxes with a list of the latest and most exciting opportunities in and around Downing. This could be anything from graduate job opportunities, to societies to join, to student theatre to go enjoy. It’s great to get out of College a few times a week and make the most of the really exciting stuff going on all the time all around the city.
If you have a bulletin you’d like me to advertise (could be about a play you are in or a society you are starting), just send it to me @ [email protected]. The same goes if you want to know more about a bulletin- I cut them down so there is not an information overload, but if you would like more information about any of the events/opportunities, just let me know!

Every week I will attach a photo in the email of our beautiful college- the one this week was the first picture I every took of Downing, in my own freshers week in October 2014!

Hope you guys have a great week and make sure to get some SLEEP because I remember how exhausting freshers is- I think I slept through most of my lectures in the first week…

Comms love
Tasha Smith

*****************************************SOCIETIES/ CHARITIES TO GET INVOLVED IN*****************************************

1. Philiminality- Cross-cultural & interdisciplinary Philosophy Society
Philiminality is a Cambridge student-run platform for cross-cultural and interdisciplinary philosophy. We aim to discuss philosophical ideas, thinkers, and approaches which are frequently marginalized in both Anglo-American and "continental" academic circles. We hope to engage with broader horizons of what it means to do philosophy by discussing intersectional perspectives on brands of thought from across the world. We also recognize the value of exploring how philosophical issues interrelate with other disciplines, such as politics, theology, sociology, classics, history, psychology, and experimental science. Our events are open to everyone, whether you are interested in the basic day-to-day relevance of philosophical questions, through to the conditions for a more global approach to philosophy.
ALL EVENTS DETAILS WILL BE POSTED ON FACEBOOK PAGE.

2. PC Nicola Hughes Memorial Fund
  • The aims of our charity, the PC Nicola Hughes Memorial Fund, are to provide learning opportunities and pre-employment skills in the form of support through grants or services to children (under 21) who have suffered a tragic loss of a close family member through a violent crime such as murder or manslaughter.
  • We would like to help the victims to try and rebuild their lives and look towards the future. To be able to stand on their own feet by continuing with education, where financial situations may have changed, or start that course which will enable them to gain employment.
  • We are currently working towards providing grants to teenagers affected by violent crime in an effort to fund their university tuition fees.
  • Check out our website for upcoming events and opportunities to help us fundraise for this fantastic cause! Also contact us here if you would like to access more information on the support we provide to secondary victims of violence for you or someone you know.
