Butterfield Café

The Butterfield Café offers a range of drinks and snacks, including paninis and baguettes with a range of fillings and cakes. These can be purchased using your CamCard or cash. There are also newspapers to read alongside all the usual facilities the Butterfield Building has to offer, such as pool and table football.

Breakfast in the Butterfield: Pop in to grab a range of tasty breakfast snacks such as bacon and sausage baguettes and mini cereal boxes on the way to 9am lectures. The opening hours vary by week and are posted outside the Butterfield, but generally you can expect the Butterfield to be open:

Monday to Friday: 8am – 6pm
Saturday: 10am – 2pm

Servery

The servery is accessed through A staircase and offers cafeteria-style self-service meals every day, for dining in the Great Hall. There will be a range of meals on offer, always with at least one vegetarian option. The salad bar is also available.
Meals should be purchased using your University Card (or cash, though it is best to have your card with you to prove you are a Downing member so you won’t be charged extra) and will be automatically charged to your next college bill. A typical meal costs around £4.00, depending on your selection.

Formal Hall

This is served in the Hall on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday evenings. You must be seated by 7.30pm and the meal will last until about 9pm. Gowns must be worn by all college members and guests from other colleges.

The charge for Formal Hall is £9.95 for Downing members and £13.95 for each guest. Formal tickets may be booked using the terminal in the Porters’ Lodge or online via UpayChilli anytime from a week in advance until 11am the day before (or until 11am Friday for a Sunday formal), although more popular Formals may sell out before. The fee will be charged to your College bill. A corkage charge of £1.00 must be paid on all bottles of wine and other alcohol brought in. Non-alcoholic beverages are not subject to corkage. You can also buy a selection of wine from the Servery bar up to 7.20pm and the charge can be placed on your College bill.
